If you are an American citizen, you do not need a passport to drive to Mexico and return....only for flying.  You do need a photo I.D. and a proof of citizenship...birth certificate.  See site below and read carefully.

i was just there for memorial weekend and had no problem without a passport.. just my id and birth cert were enough

Recently the law has changed, and you need a passport to fly and to drive. My dad left recently and he thought he didn't need his passport and we had to go get him. Please be careful, the road has been terrible lately. There are gangs that dress up as cops and their cars are also cop cars and they will steal everything you got!!!
