Has anyone contributed to society in a good way from the drinking alcohol?

Question

For an example:

How back in the early 1900's they would use alcohol to cause a patient to get drunk and then perform surgery which would reduce the pain.

Any other examples of where drinking alcohol resulted in a good outcome, invention, etc...

where to even begin? some of the most amazing literature has been written on booze--  check out Charles Bukowski or dylan thomas. music as well! or how about politics and philosophy? many of the greek greats had something positive to say about the effect of booze on the mind, not to mention benjamin franklin and winston churchill!

It was one of the earliest forms of food preservation. Beer was made from grain and it preserved the grain much longer than it would have lasted otherwise. Beer has nutritional value and saved a lot of people from starvation way back in history. Same thing with wine. Grapes go bad. Wine doesn't.

Of course: Many cadovers of men and women who drank heavily are used in the study of liver deseases, stomach cancer, and pancreatic cancer.  If not for them we would be ages away from finding effective treatments.
