I've always dreampt of doing a worldwide cruise. I don't like those purpose-built 'Gin Palaces' , has anyone done trips on Merchant Cargo Ships? and can you relay your experiences.

  1. here is some web sites about it  http://www.freighterworld.com/index.html   http://www.geocities.com/freighterman.ge...

  2. Very few cargo ships accept passengers nowadays - I think

yoy will have problems finding one.

  3. I have looked into it, but I did not care for the lack of amenities.  When I go on a cruise, I want to be taken care of, and you do not get that treatment on a freighter.

  4. It's a great adventure. But nor days would be difficult to find a Merchant Cargo Ship that still might take people...but there are some that still sails with illegal documentation or not updated documentation and those might take people, but I wouldn't recommend...some will treat you even as a slaves...believe or not there are some that do...

Today I would say...don't do it it's too risky!

  5. www.strandtravel.co.uk do freighter holidays.

Never more than 12 pasengers (after that a doctor is compulsory) going all over the world.

They also do trips on MV Patricia which is the Trinity House "work" boat which repairs/maintains all the buoys and lighships around the UK.

We are going on it (for a week) in May after having seen a fascinating documentary about the ship on (I think Discovery channel) TV.
