Has anyone done an assignment on Van gogh? ?

Question

i have to write a intrdoduction,(who he was, where he was born what inspired him to become an artist)

that i have to analysis his art work.( how is his work constructed or planned ( composition, focal point) analyse the elements and principals.

i have to choose a art work and describe the elemnts of the work and the describe the subject matter.

then i have to make opinion on it. what are the qualities of his work

For your introduction you will have to read about his lifestory But note that there was no special incident that inspired him to become an artist

analysing his artwork in general is very difficult. It is better to take one work (or even two if that is what is required) and describe as much as you can about it. Don't choose Starry Night. I suggest you choose one of his portraits that he produced in Paris. That of the Art Dealer Pere Tanguy there is loads of info about it, and don't forget to mention the Japanese figures in the background which relate to his interest in Japanese prints and use of complimentary colors (he discovered color in Paris). .

As regards making an opinion. You could write upon the lines that Van GGogh opened up the way for Expressionist painting, and the use of color to express the artist's feelings. I Hope this is helpful as a start.
