Question:

Has anyone done this??

My fiance and I want to do a Cord of Three Strands Ceremony during our wedding. There is a metal ring with three ropes on it symbolizing the bride, the groom and god. The groom will hold the ring and then I will braid it. This will symbolize our unity with each other and god. (we are doing this instead of the unity candle). Our pastor has never heard of it, but thinks it is a good idea. Has anyone ever done this? I was just wondering how common it was.

  1. It sounds like a wonderful idea! I haven't heard of it, nor have I done it...but be creative! It's YOUR wedding.

  2. Never heard of it until today.  But it sounds very intriguing and meaningful.

  3. I've never heard of it or seen it done at a wedding - but it sounds interesting. I think as long as the pastor explains it to the audience then it will be fine.

  4. Must be a new trend, and its your wedding so do everything that you want to, your only doing this once!

  5. This is one form of the Pagan Handfasting ceremony. Sometimes there are cords of rope with the ring, sometimes ropes or cords are loosely braided around the bride's and groom's hands to bond them together. It is very common in Pagan ceremonies, as well as some L*****n ceremonies (though I often haven't heard of it done with g*y male ceremonies).

It's a beautiful tradition that has been going on for thousands of years. My husband and I will be having it done at our wedding this Saturday.

Although some people have mixed feelings once they find out it's a Pagan tradition. Oh, well. Most Christian traditions did come from Pagan ones.
