I am researching the best route to Greece and then onto Lesbos.

Has anyone ever done the trip? Any advise out there? I would be travelling with my partner and dog too, so any guidlines on travelling with a dog through Europe? Thank you. Dawn T.

  1. a little logic and common sense is a must when travelling by car in most european countries..i truly hope you have a wild time ..and safe one ..but just a word of waring...every time your about to cross any foreing border  check your car in side out..as criminals will take advantage of your travels to put contraband in your car with out you knowing it happens quiet often..when you park your car park it like an local...get to know how locals act blend in..criminals look for tourist to take advantage off..so be very delegent  and enjoy ur self . sorry to put a dampner on your question but these things happen.just trying to give you some good advice.

  2. Avoid travelling through ex-Yugoslavian countries. The best option is to go through Italy and take the ferry from Ancona to Patras. As for the dog, you need a european passport for him, with all his shots etc. Ask your vet. Just keep in mind that you should find rooms that accept dogs in Greece, beforehand. Not all hotels do (not just in Greece, I guess, I was in the UK recently and most of the hotels I found did not accept pets.).

  3. i will ask a friend who has. get back to you

Are you going by car? - if so you have 2 options.

    Option 1

    Ferry across the channel

    Option 2

    Ferry across the channel

Ferry from Angona / Brindisi to Patras then on to Loutraki and Athens

Fares depend on car size and passengers but vary

Greece is now expensive - not what it used to be.

not sure if this is of any help?

  4. There are two ways.  You can drive through France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, then Macedonia and into Greece, but when I did that, I had problems with the Serbian police who would not accept my UK insurance policy so I had to buy more insurance to cross their country.  The other way is to drive through France, Switzerland, Italy and then take a ferry to Greece from Bari, or Brindisi.  A variation is France, Germany, Austria and Italy. Both routes are motorway almost all of the way although you need to pay tolls as you go. That way you will be inside the EU all of the way and documentation will be much easier.  I know about taking a horse, but I don't know anything about travelling with a dog.

  5. hmm... you will have to go through bulgaria, albania or f.y.r.o.m.  and these places can be really dodgy, you have to be very careful (many of my friends had things stolen at these places). From greece, if u want to go to Lesvos by boat, you will have to use thessaloniki's port. (thessaloniki has also the closest airport to the island, although you can find boat and plane tickets from athens as well).

Have fun (sounds adventurous but great!)

  6. Suggested route would be France, (possible Germany), Switzerland (Gottard Tunnel) Italy to Venice or Ancona. Then take Minoan line ferry (or Anek) to Igumenitsa or Patras. The drive takes 2 days in sensible terms so you need to find a dog friendly hotel (Ibis?) and be at Venice 1200 or Ancona 1500. The ferry adds another day but the boats are posh with dog facilities. Tolls about £50 for one way but the swiss toll is good for a year.

I've just done this trip (without dog) and it's quite pleasant. You might want to think about a second overnight at say Verona if you are planning on the Venice route just to protect you from hold ups. The Ferries are busy, so book early and accept some flexibility on your travel dates.
