Happened to me today, I from going from Littlehaven to Crawley and there was no ticket machine. I also didnt have enough time to cross to the other platform and get a ticket otherwise I would be late for college. I would usually get a ticket from the conducter btw. I shall write an appeal.

  1. It's unlikely an appeal would help.  It's up to you to make sure you have a valid ticket. If there was a ticket office there then there was no reason not to get the ticket. They would just say you should have left home earlier.

  2. Earlier this year, there was a court case involving a number of individuals who chose to challenge their on-train fines. The magistrate fined them £60 apeice, plus the costs of the court costs.  He made it clear that a repeat apperance would result in a short stay in one of Her Majesty's Prisions.

  3. It is not the fault of the train company that you got to the train station late, and not having enough time to buy a ticket is not sufficient reason to travel without a ticket.

You are going to have to pay the fine and not do it again.
