Question:

Has anyone else had this happen?

I am 34 weeks pregnant, and even though I haven't been measuring larger than where I should be, my doctor feels that the baby is very large. I go in today to get another sonogram to see how big he is and to make sure he isn't going to be too big to deliver naturally.

Has this happened to anyone else; their baby ended up being too large for them to deliver? I really don't want to have to have a c-section and my dr. said that if he is going to be over 10lbs we could induce early. What is your experience with this situation? Or do you know anyone who had a similar situation to mine.

I guess I'm just a little nervous about "rushing" him, and need some words of wisdom.

Thanks a bunch!

  1. i was measuring 2 weeks ahead so i went in for an ultrasound and they said the baby was big. i am now measuring right on but they still believe the baby is getting to big so i am being induced at 39weeks they say she will weigh at least 8pounds if not 9pounds by then

  2. I am not a doctor or expert of any kind, but to me all the worrying seems a little premature. First of all, you haven't been measuring larger at all - so WHY does your doctor still feel the baby is large? Is he/she basing it on your family history? Because that can be a factor, but doesn't necessarily have to be (I was a 10 lb baby, my husband was an 11 lb baby - and our 1st daughter was 6 lbs the day after her due date).

Not only that, but even an ultrasound can be inaccurate at predicting the baby's size. And at 34 weeks, you still have a ways to go, anyhow, so it seems kind of pointless to be worrying now since you have no idea what kind of growth spurt the baby may or may not have between now and delivery.

But like I said - I am no doctor - this is just what my feelings are on the situation. I think there are probably a lot of needlessly done c-sections because doctors overestimate a baby's size, or underestimate the woman's body's ability to deliver it.

  3. A semi similar experience happened to me.  At my second ultrasound they said my son measured big.  So i got scheduled another ultrasound like a month later.  She had me prepared saying if he was still big i would have to go to a high risk clinic and maybe plan for an c section.  At the ultrasound the tech said he looked fine maybe he would come out to be 8 pounds or so.  And my doctor just called me yesterday and said my baby is now in the 89th percentile and should be delivered naturally.  So the due date could be a little off.  Or there could be a number of different reasons why he measured big.  However, if you do measure big do not worry if they want to induce you.  You will be full term and will not be rushing the baby.  Good luck to you.

  4. Well, I was in a similar situation they told me I was too small to deliver my son who was estimated at about 5 pounds. I went on to deliver him naturally and he weighed in at 7lbs 15 oz. After they told me if they knew for sure he was that big they would have done a C-section. My second pregnancy was induced on my due date, due to complications. She was fine, no issues with induction. My third was born pre-mature at 35 weeks, she was 6lbs and 8 oz, she didn't have any issues either. Good luck, you will know whats best.

  5. they said the same thing to me, but then the ultrasound came back that i just had a lot of fluid, and my baby is actually quite short.

i do have gestational diabetes which threatens to make my baby big, and if so i will have to have a c-section earlier then his due date.

these day and age children born early are perfectly safe. especially if you can wait till 36weeks then your baby will be thriving just fine once he's out in the world x

    best of luck x

  6. Well, it could also be a case that the baby may be gaining weight quickly now, but then will plateau and hopefully he'll be small enough to deliver naturally. If your baby is born a little early, he'll be fine! My daughter was 17 days early and she was perfectly healthy. Try eating lower fat foods for the next couple weeks to try to keep your weight and the baby's weight in check. You don't have to starve yourself, of course, but just eat smaller meals, but more often.

My b/i/l's brother was born naturally and he was 13 lbs! Of course, that was back in the day when c-sections weren't very common! I just couldn't imagine pushing out a kid that big! Ugh! Just relax and listen to your doctor. He wants what's best for you AND the baby, so don't worry!

  7. My daughter was 8lb. 5oz. and she was too large for me to pass through my hips. I tried pushing her out for over 4 hours without ANY progress. You would see the top of her head and then she would go right back up after I was down with the push. Her shoulders wouldn't pass through and I ended up having to have a c-section.

But then again I was almost an 11 pound baby and my mom had me naturally. It really all depends on your own body, you very well may be able to give birth naturally whether you baby ends up being big or not.

  8. my niece was big when she was born. the doctors recommended a c section but she didnt get one. the baby just split her open a little bit and she got stitched back up. it didnt hurt cause she was already numb in tht area.

im sure everything will be fine.

    i'll pray u have a healthy delivery.

  9. Your doctor will do the best thing for you and your baby....So if you need to be induced, then be induced. If you don't then they won't. But the sonogram will tell you either way, so just hang in there. Good luck to you and your new little one!
