Question:

Has anyone else in LGBT noted the spell check feature?

I enjoy Yahoo Answers but I cringe when I see all the disregard for spelling, even with the spell check thing coming up. I sometimes see a good question but don't feel like answering because the person asking is presenting themselves as an idiot who can't spell or won't take the time to correct it. What's up????

  1. Perhaps they don't necessarily know how to use the spell check... I don't know...I was thinking about that too...

  2. It's come too little too late; the generation raised on the internet without it are just totally oblivious to any spelling or grammar rules. If you misspell some doozy of a word, I'm not going psycho, but there have been some questions here asked in "text message language". I don't even text like that. It's at a point where I just refuse to answer questions because I'm straining to understand what they mean, when if they just stopped "tlkng 2 me lk ths", I could do it effortlessly.

  3. It isn't always the poor spelling which annoys me the most (although the spell check feature is RIGHT THERE!) It's the 'texting' style of spelling such as neone for 'anyone' & lyk for 'like'-sometimes the questions are just too hard to decipher.I have to have a moan about what's bugging me at the moment though: ect instead of etc & then instead of than (as in "I'm taller then you") surely they know that's incorrect?

  4. I have to admit, I preferred the 'old' spellcheck feature; it was less intrusive. I have a spellchecker in my browser anyway, but I rarely need it; most of the spelling errors it picks up are just typos, which are easily spotted when reading through the text before posting.

I do agree that 'txtspk' is just annoying; it's hard to read, and there's no need for it when you've got a full keyboard in front of you.

["Ric"; 'realise' is the English spelling. We spell many words differently over here; it doesn't make them wrong ;) ]

  5. Lol I actually don't mind it!

I love when the people can't spell or type properly cause it's fun making them look like an idiot ;)

  6. For some reason LGBT on my spell check comes back LEGIT.

That's short for legitimate. I think it's appropriate.

  7. I have always wondered why it never recognizes simple words or why it allow wrong ones, like "realise" when it actually is spelled with a "z" and now it considers it right.

  8. I can spell without it so I find it annoying.  There are a number of words it doesn't recognize, such as "Obama."

  9. I know what you mean.  However, the way Yahoo has the spell-check feature set up is very inconvenient.  It pops up and if you don't use it right away, sometimes it doesn't appear again and you can't spell-check your answer/question.  It's annoying!  We really need to be able to also manually spell-check when the pop-up thing goes away.

  10. That useless thing doesn't always work.  I appreciate it when it does work because my brain can't always spot my spelling mistakes, but if it doesn't work and I'm not sure about an answer I will post it then edit it, because editing an answer takes you back to the original version (hooray!) which is infinitely better than the new one.

I know that doesn't answer your question, I just wanted to share it.

  11. I hear you!  I have a diagnosis of dyslexia and I manage perfectly well to communicate in a easy to understand and correct manner.

I take care to break up my paragraphs into bite sized chunks to make it easier to skim read too as I have ADD and am sure other people will find what I have to say more interesting due to it being an easier read.

If a piece of text has too many abbreviations in it, silly deliberate spellings or Is all written in one big punctuated paragraph, I just stop reading and look else where!

I do however forgive people their ignorance of not using the correct word like; their, there, they're/were, wear, where.  I am sure that if they knew the difference they would be embarrassed and not do it.  It took me a long time to learn these too.

I definitely forgive typo's!  I do this often when i am typing in a hurry because I am enthusiastic about the question/answer!
