Question:

Has anyone ever auditioned for a student film?

Okay, I'm thirteen years old, and I'm about to audition for my very first student film. It's at Watkins Art Institute of Nashville. Does anybody know what they do at these auditions? I've done cold reads before, I have a monologue ready (just in case), and I've auditioned in front of people before, but can anyone give me any specifics? I've been acting for eight years so I know the process, I'm just looking for some details.....

P.S. It's for student films, so like student directors, at a University. (Watkins) I figured this was useful information that I should re-state.

Thanks!

  1. Most times - at least in my experience - it's a taped, cold read, sometimes with, sometimes without dialogue partners, but don't be surprised if they have you do a monologue first.  You didn't say whether you've been given sides or not (I'm assuming not), but if you have, do your best to memorize and prepare(!) given what little time you may have.  If not, then just go with your best instincts and, most of all, RELAX!  Do your breathing exercises beforehand and go in with the confidence I'll bet you already have, based upon your experience.  Also, you may be asked to improvise but don't let it surprise you, either, and if you are, again, trust your instincts, don't over-think the scene and remember the "Yes, and...." principle.

(Good thing to have that monologue ready, just in case, 'cause you never know...)

As for the director, his/her experience may be limited (even less experienced than you), so patience is a virtue.  He or she is learning the craft, too.  On the other hand, you just might be working with a future Scorsese, (Penny) Marshall or Tarantino.

    Break a leg!

P.S.  I'm impressed by your ambition and wish success upon you.  Reminds me of a young lady who was about your age when I worked with her twenty-some years ago and grew up to become Liz Vassey.
