Has anyone ever been called an Alpha Female? What is an Alpha Female?

This male friend of mine told me that I am an Alpha Female. He said men chase me instead of me chasing men. He said that he thinks other women don't usually like me because I am too much competition and they are threatened by me. I have female friends but they are usually strong women like me. I am not sure what an Alpha Female is? I consider myself to be a strong woman with Feminist ideals. But I don't try to intimidate others or have power over others. I'm not sure if I like being called an Alpha female. Is this a negative thing to be called or a compliment?

I have never been entirely clear what an Alpha female or an Alpha male actually is.  I read 'Brave New World' at a very impressionable age, and this left me with a strong aversion for categorising people alphabetically.

However, one thing I have noticed is that whenever people do alphabetise themselves, they are always Alphas, nobody ever admits to being a Beta.  Betaism is something that only happens to other people.

Yes, I have been called the Alpha female.  

I am the matriarch of a large family, and my husband is the patriarch.  Guess that makes us the Alpha female and Alpha male.

It has nothing to do with who chases whom; it has to do with strength, maturity and wisdom.
