Question:

Has anyone ever been island camping?

My boyfriend and I are camping on Santa Cruz island, off the coast of Ventura, CA, in the Channel Islands National Park. The map of the campground shows 'drinking water' and a 'comfort station', campsites are equipped with 'food storage containers' (how big are these and what do they look like?) and the website provides some information about conditions there. Has anyone ever camped there before? Can you give me a general idea of just how 'rough' it is? I'd like to get some honest info from someone who has been there before, so I can be prepared. (Should I bring toliet paper? Are sinks available anywhere?) I have many questions and I'd like some real answers without calling CA to ask (from NJ)

  1. I've been there, but I'm not going to be much help.  It's been over twenty years since I was last there.  I grew up in Ventura and we preferred Lake Casitas because it was closer.  I remember it being just like any other campground though.  It's no hotel or anything, but you're not left out in the wild to fend for yourself.

Your best bet is probably going to be to call them.  Just set aside some time in case it takes a while to get through, although I don't see why it would.  I'm sure they get asked those kind of questions all the time.
