Has anyone ever done this at a tournament?

I was at a pga tour event and i was watching the pros chip and putt around the green was a fence there was a ball near the fence it was a practice ball from the range (titleist prov 1 x) i scoop it up when noone was looking and put it in my pocket. Happen to u?

Was the ball inside the fence or outside?  If its inside the fence, then it still belonged to the tournament.  If it's outside then it's free for all.

However, as a spectator in a tournament, wait for freebies to be given out and not picked up.

It is bad Golf etiquette to find a lost ball while it is still rolling

When I go to the pro events, I always go and look deep in the bushes and always find almost brand new golf balls!

No but I get given balls sometimes by the pros. Nothing special.
