  1. Millions of people have filed for K-1 visas.  The process is the same for all of them.  There are only 3 forms.  There's absolutely no need for a lawyer.  Expect it to take anywhere from a year to a year and a half.

The American citizen files I-129F, I-864 and G-325A.

At some point the US embassy or consulate closest to the fiance/fiancee will send out a packet of forms and information.  The foreign fiance/fiancee will complete everything, take a physical exam and return everything.  At some point the fiance/fiancee will have an interview with an American consular officer who will make the decision to grant, or not grant, the K-1.

If the K-1 is granted the foreign fiance/fiancee comes to the USA and has 90 days to get married.  After marriage the foreign spouse files I-485, I-131 and I-765 with the USCIS.

    The forms are here.....

  2. I went through K-1 process before and we didn't use a lawyer. We just followed and submitted all the requirements needed. From the date of filing of the petition to the delivery of the visa, it took 7 months for us.I suggest you read the requirements very well and double check them again before filing.Make sure you also have duplicates on everything you submitted so you know what are the items you gave them. You can read all about the requirements at www.uscis.gov.A very useful website you can browse and join forums is www.visajourney.com.Good luck.
