  1. In '93 I was in the Navy and crossed the Atlantic in a US Destroyer.  It was the toughest voyage we ever made.  The Atlantic is increadibly rough most of the time.  6 years at sea, and that was the only time I ever got sea sick.  I darn-near got swept over the side at one point.  It took something like 10 days to traverse... but we dropped-down to the Panama Canal.  I don't even think there are too many ships that cross the Atlantic other than Merchant and Military...

I wouldn't suggest it.  I'm sure it will cost more than flying and would probably be a miserable trip.  The crew will most likely be foreigners....  the ship will probably be nasty.... yeah... good luck with that.

I've flown across the Atlantic many times.  It's a long flight.  But there's something on the plane that helps pass the time quicker... alcohol.  I like to get lubed-up a bit in the airport bar before I get on the plane.  Not only does it settle the nerves, but after 2 or 3 more drinks on the plane... well, I usually wake up with only a couple hours to go.

  2. My mother married a canadian soldier in WWII. she was shipped out to Canada by boat. It was a long journey and she said it was boring (nothing to look at in middle of nowhere) and the sea sickness was bad!

i don't like flying either, but grit my teeth and do it. Get some valium from your dr or maybe try hypnosis or a fear of flying course.

  3. NO!!!!

atlantic ocean is rough.. you will be so sea sick and it takes 5 hours to america on plane.. it would take about 10 days by boat!

you need to overcome your fear of flying :)

  4. Strictly speaking, ferries don't cross the ocean.  They're strictly meant for short distances of a few miles.  There are passenger ships that cross the ocean, but the last time I checked prices they were a lot more expensive than flying and, of course, it takes much longer.

  5. You can still sail around the world.  You can book passage on cargo ships.  They don't take many people, but it is apparently quite a popular way for some to travel - a cheap cruise!

Check out the link below.  It is a UK company but I'm sure if you google for freighter or cargo ship passengers etc then you will come up with some which go from the USA - and the UK company below might well take you in the opposite direction too.

Makes me laugh that people keep referring to the Titanic - it was in 1912.  Amazing how you get thousands of ships sailing the globe every year, but people keep going on about one ship which went down nearly 100 years ago!

  6. not really.

plus.. why would you want to?

    ever seen TITANIC?

  7. I would be afraid to take a ferry!  Haven't you seen the movie Titanic?

Of course a voyage on the QM2 might be nice.

But then, over 1.6 Billion (1,600,000,000) people fly on commercial airlines each year and survive.  Your odds of getting struck by lightning are better than dying in a airliner mishap.
