I asked a version of this question earlier and the only response referred to IE viruses. I want to know if anyone has ever gotten a virus directly from an email without clicking a link or running an attachment. Please give a reference.

As far as I know the only possible repercussion of opening an email is the sender might find out that you exist.

  1. If that persons computer is infected with a virus there is a possibility that you can get infected to.  Your net server may not catch and purge all the viruses that are being sent sent through their system.

  2. Unless you open an attachment, you won't get virus into your computer by using browser based email accounts such as Hotmail, Yahoo, Google and the likes.  A most vulnerable if you have personal email program such as Outlook that resides in your computer..yes you will likely get viruses just by viewing it.  Browser based email..you're just safe.  The sender won't know if you're exist just by opening the email.. The only way the sender know if you're exist is when he send a request to the mail program to prompt the user to response to the request (msg box window) that you have view it.

  3. not me but it is very possible. if you dont open any e-mails from completely unknown senders, and never open attachments unless you are sure about what they are, then you should be fine as far as e-mail viruses

  4. Yes, I have.  And it crashed my computer....about four years ago.

  5. Yes.

  6. Nope, I never open emails unless I know who it's from & all spam gets automatically deleted

Dunno how I could get a virus though, cos my AV scans all attachments anyway

  7. You should receive Malware removal support from a site like http://geekpolice.net/ if you have a virus or spyware.

I recommended it because they provide real fast support and a cure is guaranteed.
