I bought a new pair of runners about a month ago and ever since I've started wearing them, they have given me calf muscle cramps as soon as I start to run, its mainly in my inner calf muscle (on the inside, lower part of my leg). The shoes are asics 2130's womens running. I use to use some old reebok ones which I must admit were passed there use by date, but I just cant seem to push through this hurdle of my legs aching whilst running. I use to run 2-3kms straight with no promlem now I cant even get to a minute without my muscles aching. I am training to beat the beep test at 7.5 to join the army so its a must I get through this, the muscle aches held me back on the last test and I only made it to 5.5 before my legs ached and had to stop. Can anybody help with some answers to my situation?

  1. Since it seems like your shoes properly fit your foot type, consider getting (or making) a slant board to help your stretching...when I was training for a half-marathon, my physical therapist put me on a 3-5x a day stretching routine that incorporated the slant board to work out my calves.

    Here's what I mean by slantboard: http://www.amazon.com/Fitterfirst-Slant-...

You can also just make one out of plywood.

  2. Well it has to do with your shoe. Make sure you know what type of arch you have. (flat, somewhere in the middle, or high- high being you can fit a golf ball inside.)

Tell the people at the stpre you're getting your running shoes at that you have that arch, or you can ask them for help finding the right shoe.

  3. Get a differnet pair of shoes. I'd try to get the same kind of you had before if they are still being made. That way you know they'll be alright to run in.

If you can't find them, try some out at the store and make sure they aren't going to cause any aching before you leave the store.

  4. You just need to massage them, and stretch a little better.

  5. keep stretching and massage the calves by hand while you watch tv or something

its just your calves are not conditioned

  6. nah never before sorry cant help with this...

  7. Go to a shop like athletes foot, where they find you the ones that are right for you.

  8. How well are you stretching? Calf problems are often due to tight muscles.
