My daughter was tutored 2 hours a week for reading all of the 2nd grade school year. I worked with her this summer on it everyday. i had her read one small book or 2 chapters a day in a larger book. Her tutor says she needs to come back. I think she has improved so much and wonder if the tutor just wants the income again this year. I paid her 40 a week. Do you think they can learn to read at grade level in a year?

  1. I would love to be able to give all of my students one-on-one time because it really is THAT great.  However, if you suspect that the tutor just wants more income, then you should just pull her out of tutoring for the time being.  If you find during the coming school year that she needs more help, simply hire a tutor again.  Let your daughter know that you're super proud of how far she's come but that if you don't have her go for tutoring, then that means she has to keep up the great work.

  2. What does her second grade teacher say?

If you're wondering if she reads at grade level and for some reason can't ask the teacher, look up on the internet some sites that rank books by reading level, and see how she does with something at her level.  By third grade, she should be able to read things like the Boxcar Children books fairly easily and comprehend what she reads, and read aloud with inflection.

edit -- does your school have a reading specialist? ours does, and if I were in your situation I'd ask for an evaluation by the reading specialist about what level my child was reading on, whether she needed tutoring or whether it was sufficient to just encourage a lot of reading over the summer, and if she needed tutoring, exactly what the goals of the tutoring should be.
