Has anyone ever heard of using dish soap to repel bugs??

I heard once that if you put "Lemon Joy" dish soap and water in a bucket it is somehow supposed to attract mosquitoes to keep them away from you. I do not know how much to use or anything though. Has anyone else heard of this? (skeeters are bad this year)

Thanks!

  1. yes! I've heard of that. and if you want to get rid of other bugs, such as bees, gnats, etc. add sugar to the dish soap. It really works! they can get in it, but not out! they get stuck! hope i answered ya!

  2. I have never heard that one before, but I have heard if you spray the area you around with Listerine, it will keep them away. I haven't tried it yet. Good luck.

  3. yes, our family does it all the time when we do those "get togethers" down here.

shure does beat the heck out of that stinky off stuff.

well, it really doesnt matter, just pour it in the bucket, or whatever your using. then your all hooked up!

    hope i helped some.(:

  4. No.

  5. Yes you can use common household products to get rid of insects.

  6. I've never heard of that. You could always try it! If it doesn't work, my advice would be to get some good old-fashioned citronella candles.

  7. I have heard of spraying plants with it to kill the bugs and also to keep mosquitoes away from you at BBQ and such.  Yes,  use Lemon Fresh Joy.  A couple of drops on a white dish on the table works well, no need to use a bucket altho that may work too.

  8. Nopee never heard of it

but it doesnt hurt to try(:

  9. I have seen people use dish soap mixed with water in a sprayer to kill bugs (specifically box elders) and it works very well. But I am not sure if this also works with mosquitoes.  It couldn't hurt to try the soap in the bucket idea though.  Just squeeze some in a bucket, fill 'er up with water and see what happens.  You probably can't go wrong on proportions when dealing with dish soap and water.  Good Luck!

  10. Dish soap stuck in mountain dew works to get bees.  However, I don't think that dish soap in water could get mosquitos.  It's worth a shot, but don't forget to put on some "OFF" first!

  11. just ran across something concerning fleas. put a dish of water/dish soap solution at a supposed infested area under a gooseneck lamp at night, and the fleas will apparently jump in the water and drown. idk, haven't tried it, yet.

  12. Have definitely heard of it, though in my experience it has proven to be a myth that does not work ... the skeeters must surely think I am the sweetest thing that ever walked...

bug spray works alright, but it stinks and is not nearly as effective as the AVON product "Skin-So-Soft" which is actually designed to be a skin product and it smells great and works wonderously well.

  13. It's a myth, nothing more.

Use something that contains Icaridin (Saltidin). Its the insect repellent most likely to work.

  14. actually a soap detergent call LOC was great for that kind of thing. We used it on our gardens as well and it not only kept the bugs away, it actually made our plants grow larger than the ones we didn't use it on. Now to find someone who sells it. You may find it on Ebay..  good luck.

  15. I have heard that dishsoap and water will kill bugs like on the sides of your house and stuff but not repel mosquitoes.

  16. get a spray bottle, put listerine in it spray around area your going to be in , it will work, good luck.

  17. I haven't heard of that...

What does work as a natural bug repellent is to eat lots of citrus fruits or rub lemon on your skin directly. Mosquitoes hate how sour they are.

I've also heard that lavender is also a natural mosquito repellent.

  18. I can't much about mosquitoes, but if u put water with a touch of soap in a white plate(styrofoam is what i used), it will attract

fleas by the hundreds!!!  We were infested with fleas and had tried every chemical with no luck.  I put several of these plates around my house, and for some reason they were attracted to the white and jumped in and drowned literally by the hundreds!!  Perhaps it's the same concept.  The soap in the water causes a change in surface tension which keeps them from jumping back out.  I'd say give it a try and see if it works with mosquitoes!!

  19. My neighbor used to use a soap and water solution in little plastic cups in his garden he said it  attracted grubs i don't know about the mosquito's but you should look around your property for things that will hold standing water i.e. old tires, buckets , really any thing that will hold water and let it get stagnant. That is where they breed and grow into the little vampires they are. GOOD LUCK

  20. Get a citronella candle. You can get citronella  fuel for tiki torches, so it's not so obvious, and you can put them pretty much anywhere.

  21. This sounds very unlikely.  You can use a small amount of detergent in water to keep bugs off plants and vegetables, but I don't think mosquitoes would be attracted to it.

Apparently this is an old wive's tale: http://www.snopes.com/oldwives/dishsoap....

  22. i heard of it but try using a fabric softner sheet . an mouthwash also works mixed in with a little water i know these work
