  1. I've seen people do this and jack up the shipping costs.

i.e. Plasma TV sold for $0.01 with shipping costs of $1,500!

I think this actually allows you to get around eBay's listing fees, but I'm not sure about that one.

If you want free stuff check out Craigslist.com and look for curb alerts

  2. I haven't done that on eBay but I have done it on Freecycle - well, that was completely free including shipping!

  3. I start all my CD auctions at one penny.  Many sell for that.  With the shipping discount I give for multiple CDs purchased at the same time, I am sure I have given away a few CDs for only one penny including shipping.

Before eBay's recent change in the digital downloads, I know that many people used to sell items for one penny with no shipping to increase their feedback.  eBay has put an end to that however.

I just did a search and found several items that ended with one bid for only a penny with $0 shipping.  Most of those are self promotion type auctions.  For example, a company sold a copy of their catalog for a penny with free shipping.  Here is the auction number: 330244521055.  Here is an actual item (a USB Charger) that sold for a penny with free shipping:  150261046093.

    Hope that answers your question.

  4. A lot of electronics start at 1 penny with free shipping.

Like there is a lot Xbox 360 Wireless Controlllers, game cubes, Xbox 360 wireless adapters, and etc.

    They call it overstock selling.

People that do this are companies that get things by the 100s and know that the bidding will go a lot higher and it eventually will get to the actual price.

Answer in straight: Yes, people do this.
