What would you suggest? I am 19, I own my own vehicle and I have lots of money saved up. I just have this crazy urge to get in my car, get away from this small town life, and leave. Where would you recommend I go or do? Also, once I get there, how should I find a job or place, etc.? Any suggestions would be appreciated. No stupid remarks please. Thanks!

  1. I think if you are financially able to do a trip like that, GO!  It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the US, and probably find out a lot about yourself as well.  It would be great if you had someone who could travel with you.. not only for companionship, but also for safety purposes.

I don't know where you are, so not sure what direction to send you to, but I'd say, stick to main highways, major cities, in case you have car problems.   Buy a membership to AAA just to be on the safe side.

Sometimes it's hard to get work without a permanent address, so seek out the "day labor" places when you find a City you might want to stick around.  As far as housing goes, check Craigslist or go to the local College Campus and check bulletin boards.  It's a great way to find someone looking for a roomie in a hurry.

Whatever you do, keep in close contact with your family.  I know they will be worried about you.  Cherish every moment of your great adventure, and try to keep a journal so when you are old ( like me) you can go back and tell your kids or grandkids about the wild year of 08'.

    Good luck and Be safe!

  2. Well NO I have always wanted to do that! I live on Northern Coast of CA......you would probably like the Coast here there are Redwood trees and Beaches!

I really wish you lots of luck, just be safe and its probably good to make sure you have plenty of supplies ans back up plan like road service in case of emergency! oh and let me know how it goes!  I read a good book about a guy who did that. His name is William Least Heat Moon and it is called "Blue Highways"

  3. Well alexia - do tell us where you are so we can direct you from that point

And yes I did that when I was 19, ended up in Phoenix AZ for two and a half years. It was a nice break from the "small town" life.
