Has anyone ever recieved a sweepstakes check in the mail that was real? I received a ck today?

from first union processing center. The ckeck is real!!! it's watermarked. all the addresses are legit. I looked them up. I've read about scams like this but this check is real!!! it says i have to cash it and use it to pay some sort of taxes and then they will send the remainder. maybe i'm just being stupid but i have been online doing sweepstakes a while back. could it be??? it says my name was picked out of 55k people. it's some internationa promotions program. I know it sounds too good to be true, but what if it is??? what should I do??

I would still think its a scam because you still have to pay something. I recommend you just take the money that they gave at first and keep it.

Nigerian 419 scam.  Send the Check to the FBI fraud division.  If it is genuine they will return it, if not they can use it to track down the scammers.

If you put the check through your bank account, they will get your routing number and account number, and whammo! all your money is gone.

If you cash it this is what will happen.  You will get the cash from your bank, you will send them whatever the processing fee is.  You will be very happy for about a week.  You will get notice from your bank (where you cashed the check) that you now owe the check amount back to the bank plus all fees associated with it.   It takes time for the banks to determine that it is not a good check.  You are now out of pocket the original check amount plus all fees.   Sounds like a great idea to me.
