When the pastor says, "if there is anyone who objects to this marriage, please now stand, or forever hold your peace." And someone stands and objects. What happened then?

  1. Then they all vote on it and whoever has the best answer gets to marry the bride.

    duh.

  2. umm then the person who objects gets smacked and then escorted out by the brides father and older brothers. The person is then "taken care of" out back by the dumpsters.  The wedding goes on and everyone is happy :)

  3. Don't see it any more, but back in the day, the wedding would be put on hold until the objection would be satisfied in some way.

  4. They ask them why they object. If the couple thinks thats a good reason why the shouldn't get married, than they don't. If they still want to get married than the ceremony continues.

  5. I have only seen it in movies and soap operas and usually it is "I object because he / she is married to me" or "I object because I still love him/ her"

It suppose it would depend upon what was said and what the reaction of the other other person was.  If someone stood up and said "I am married to the bride" and pulled out a marriage certificate I suppose the officiant might stop the wedding.

But if an ex boyfriend said I am still in love with her unless the bride ditched the groom for him there would be some embarrassment and the wedding would proceed

  6. If the objector persists the clergy will adjourn to a private room to see if there really is a reason.

If not, the wedding continues.  And if the offender continues they are escorted from the premises.  And if it turns ugly there's always the police.

But most ceremonies no longer include this question.

  7. I saw it on one of those worst weddings ever TV shows. The grooms ex-girlfriend stood up in the back of the church and flew into a venomous speech about how he cheated on her with the bride, how horrible they both were, what a joke them getting married was, etc. The minister repeatedly asked her to stop and to leave and she was finally removed by some guests. Needless to say she succeeded in ruining their wedding.

  8. They get asked to stop disrupting the wedding. They don't ask that anymore, like reading the banns it's been replaced by marriage licenses. If you wanted to have it, and the pastor didn't object, you could probably keep it in, but you'd need a flexible pastor, just like if you wanted to have the bride given away.
