  1. I rode the Empire Builder several years ago from Chicago to Spokane, WA...  It was an interesting trip, with lots of great mountain scenery, but if you want to do it right and can afford it, I highly recommend getting a roomette or a bedroom.  The price for the room includes meals during the trip, which would otherwise be an extra added expense.

Sitting up and trying to sleep in a "Coach Class Seat" for the whole two-day (46 hours) trip is not a great deal of fun.  Bring some books and an i-Pod or other music player to help you get through the long ride.

  2. It's doable if your young.  I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone over 50.  If you're travelling alone it's fine.  There are advantages to the sleeping car, privacy and meals, but the coach seats are comfortable and it's not like you have to stay in your seat 24/7.  They offer you a chance to upgrade once you're on the train if there is room available.  Go for it.

  3. My wife & I rode the Empire Builder from Chicargo to Seattle and return. we in a sleeper going out and coach on return. We loved it and planing on making another trip. everything was great,  met some nice people. I sugest taking a blanket and a  pellow, the pillow they furnish is small and thin. We slep well in the coach seats, there's more leg room than a bus.

    Have a good trip.
