I am on Effexor and have taken Hoodia for about a week but I started feeling weird (dizzy and nausea) quit taking the Hoodia 2 days ago and I am still feeling awful. I am seeing my doctor tomorrow but I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through the same thing and if there is a connection between the Effexor and the Hoodia.

  1. Hoodia is believed to suppress not only appetite but thirst. There have been unconfirmed reports of shepherds in Africa who took hoodia to take the edge off hunger pains, but died of dehydration because they didn't feel thirsty.

Dehydration is a possibility ~ some of the symptoms of dehydration are puffy bags under your eyes, dark circles under your eyes, dizzy spells and loss of balance, constant yawning, headaches and migraines and constipation and bloating and cramping and nausea, foggy thinking, irritability and moodiness..... :0)

Are you sure you aren't just dehydrated buddy?? Expecting your digestive system to digest food and transport essential vitamins and nutrients with no water in your system is an extremely huge ask ............ actually puffiness anywhere in your body is a signal that your body is hanging on to the little bit of water that you have and are getting very dehydrated ...... Water is imperative to life. Without water your body will have a terrible time breathing, digesting food, transporting nutrients, lubricating your joint sockets etc.etc.etc.etc......... nothing substitutes for water. your body needs at least 2 - 3 litres of water daily to function efficiently Geez, we need at least 2 litres daily just to maintain aspiration (to breathe)!! so drink up buddy.

That would explain the dizzyness and nausea.......  dehyration can do some nasty nasty things to your body if you let it.......  cut out the sodas and soft drinks and alcohol (if you drink any) as these will all only dehydrate you terribly.... cut right back on coffee and tea also is u drink it as these will also dehydrate you terribly.

  2. I have taken Effexor and other antidepressants. To answer your question about the interaction betwixt Effexor and Hoodia, the simplest and probably the most accurate answer is that no one knows for sure (in my opinion).

First of all, there is controversy about whether Hoodia works at all. Second, when a prescription med is mixed with another Rx med, no one knows exactly what the effects will be. At least that is my perspective based on personal experience. However, there is usually ample scientific data to confirm whether it is safe and effective to combine certain medications.

There is very little data about combining Rx medication with herbs and other natural remedies. My guess is that if you ask your doctor about combining Effexor with Hoodia, your doc will not recommend it. This is probably not because he knows so much about Hoodia. More likely, it is because many regular MDs (not all of them) have a bias against natural remedies.

With your dizziness and nausea, my guess is that your body was trying to tell you to avoid Hoodia. I don’t know if the problem was with Hoodia by itself or the combination of Hoodia with Effexor.

    Be well...............
