I'm considering signing up for a baby sign language class (they do games for baby, instructions and ideas for parentcs etc)...for the sign language of course and then also to have a chance to meet other moms. It's expensive, so I'm wondering if anyone has taken a class like this and what you thought?

  1. I haven't taken a course, but i'm learning from a book i bought from Waterstones, cost me £12.99 so i'm sure it's cheaper than a course.  My son seems to have grasped the Milk sign now too :)

  2. I would see if your local library has sign language DVDs that you can borrow. I used a series called "signing time". I borrowed them from the library before I had early intervention purchase a set for my son as part of his speech therapy.

  3. I've never taken a class because of the price.  There are so many other options for teaching your baby sign language, such as looking up a good web site or watching a baby signing dvd.  Though the baby may learn better from an someone who is experienced at teaching signs, I would only take the class so my baby could play and interact with other kids.

  4. If it's expensive, I would pass. There isn't any excuse for the high price. There are web sites out there which will give you a start with some basic signs, plenty of books around with more signs, and if you just want to hang out with other babies and mothers, the public library or La Leche League can do that for you for free.

I can't imagine how a class like that would actually benefit baby. You just need to keep repeating it every time the activity or item in question is being used; if you sat there and held up a glass of water and signed 'water,' then a bit of toast and signed 'food,' then a diaper and...etcetera, I think baby would be amused but not really able to absorb so much in one sitting.

  5. No, I have a book that my mom gave to me a while ago, that I never really used.  I heard that sign language was difficult to teach a baby so I guess I just gave up without even trying :(   I am much more of a hands-on person, so I think I would benefit from taking a class.  BUT, if it's expensive, maybe just buy a DVD for yourself and then you can teach Ian yourself :)

  6. We bought the book (it's available almost everywhere).  It's alot cheaper, and it's still pretty easy to use.  We created cheat sheets that showed the different signs and had them readily available so that we didn't have to keep referring to the book.  We pretty much learned as our kids did.
