If so, how was it? Long? Short? Comfortable? Uncomfortable? Too many changes? Direct? Please let me know what you thought of the ride. Was it better than flying?

  1. Trip time would be around 6-7 hours, you stay on the same train for the whole trip.  The train brings you to Penn Station in midtown Manhattan in NYC.

If you need to get to NYC in a hurry, definitely fly if you can, though flying would be almost 2x as expensive as Amtrak.

  2. Amtrak offers many trains each day over that route, called "the Empire Service".  The trip takes a bit over seven hours.  The trains are comfortable, with wide seats and lots of legroom.  There will also be a snack car, where you can purchase a light meal or a drink.  While the trip is a lot longer than flying, it is comfortable.

The route will take you first to Albany/Rensellear, and then down the Hudson River.  You'll arrive at Penn Station in the heart of the city (rather than at an airport on the outskirts of the city).  The ride down the Hudson is attractive, with some great views of the river.
