You know, put chloroplasts, mitochondria, and a heterotrophic phagocytic cell into an environment that resembled that of ancient earth and tried to see if they made a plant cell?

If they did it would be stunning evidence of the theory, right?

  1. It certainly would be good evidence for the theory, but to my knowledge, it's never been done (at least not successfully).  So until that happens, we'll just have to accept that the differences in the DNA found in the chloroplasts and mitochondria are different than that of the cell's nucleus as evidence of SET.

Of course, givent the number of times that phagocytic cells have eaten other bacteria where the symbiotic relationship didn't occur, the chances of the exact circumstances happening where this would occur again successfully would be miniscule.
