My son and I are going to NC from NJ and it's about 11 hours. If you have, is it comfortable in coach?

  1. not me but i am sure somebody has tried it before

  2. I'd never used Amtrak, hopefully I would chance in the future. Travel by coach is another thing. You would have different experience.

  3. YES! it's awesome.

  4. Not yet but I would like to, I have traveled Greyhound and Indian Trails before.

  5. I traveled from Richmond, VA to New York City.

On my return trip, we had to stop at DC and take a bus because a derailment had closed off the route.

  6. I have. Coach is not bad. You can switch to the Acella service in DC which is really nice and not too pricy.

  7. Wonderful ride----I traveled from Seattle to San Diego --1972 miles it took three days.

  8. Very nice.

  9. I went from SanDiego california to Nebraska. It is very comfortable! Love it!

  10. I admire you.  I don't have that kind of paitence.  I prefer to fly.  I have, however, had friends that had taken the train.  They complained about it for a while and said they had some weird guy staring at them most of the time.

  11. Yes, it is comfortable, but not like an sleeping car.  You will be taking the Carolinian?

  12. it's fine as long as you aren't doing an overnight.

  13. Shell out the money and get a private room.  It is way way way worth it.  Plus, the food is 5 star and can be served to you in your room if you want.

  14. I've rode from CT to FLA in coach and it was OK... The only thing that bothered me was people walking through the car all night and wondering if my wallet was safe. Other than that it was comfortable.

On the way back we got a private room in the sleeper... Much more private and you could sleep horizontal instead of upright...

All in all, Amtrak is a good deal what ever you do.

  15. I know a doctor that took the train from IL to someplace in California, said it was a nice long trip, they enjoyed it.  Their train did manage to break down in the west and had to be replaced by another one.

  16. When I was younger, my mom took my brother and I to FL from OH on the Amtrack.  There was a layover in Philly, so we went to the NJ Aquarium.  It was ok I guess.  I would probably appreciate it more now than I did back then.  That was also a 2 day trip w/out a sleeper car....

  17. A few years ago my husband traveled from San Francisco, CA to Chicago,IL on an Am track train. The trip took us about two and a half days. I personally loved it but my husband got bored pretty quickly. I do recommend that you each take your own blankets with you because they really crank the air up at night and then sell you really small scratchy blankets for $10.00 and they don't keep you warm. Have a great trip!!

  18. 2 years ago I took some students to Washington D.C. - we left from MetroPark in Edison, New Jersey.

It was a very comfortable and pleasant ride in coach!!

  19. Its ok.. Ive traveled only for about 4 hours.. Its better than a bus !  bring a couple pillows and maybe a cushy blanket.  He may want to lay on the floor at your feet.  He will want to lay down.  the seats are stiff in the back. (depending on his age) bring enough to keep him busy, a snack kit is a must,  change of clothes, and some simple hiegeine products for added comfort.  Theres nothing like a cold towel to the face after the 8th hour.

You should be fine if you take those little extra special things into consideration.

    Happy traveling.
