Question:

Has anyone ever traveled on a train with their dog?

I want to take my dog on a trip with me. A friend who works for an airline said never put your dog on a plane. But going on a train is going to be a 36 hour trip(9am to 3pm the next day), which seems a long time for dog to be caged. The price of gas deters me from driving, plus at my age don't want to drive that far alone(female). So has anyone had any experience with traveling on train with pets? Thanks!

  1. Hi, I think it wont do any good for your dog, poor thing will be locked up in a cage for 36 hours! Dogs on planes are okay but they get really scared. Maybe you could see if anyone else is heading your way?

  2. In 1946, Sir Arnold Kelsworth did what no man had done before. They laughed at him, and said it couldn't be done, but then he went on National Rail's website and quoted the conditions of carraige. He took his Yorkie on the train.

  3. If you live in the United States, Amtrak--the organization that operates intercity trains--does not permit pets on board any of their trains.  The only exception are service animals, such as seeing-eye dogs, that are clearly helping a rider with special needs.

  4. yes  just  keep  playing  with  the  dog  while  on the  way  or   travellin  a car with   some   male

  5. Which country?

Will you be able to keep the dog in the compartment with you?

If not, will you be able to go there and walk the dog on some longer stops underway?

I have traveled with my dog on the train in Europe, and often meet others doing so, but for us, dogs are just with you in the same part of the train.

On long travels we do not often see dogs, but there might be.

A dog which travels well in a car will not have any difficulties in a train, and a lot of dogs that get sick in cars do still travel well on trains.

So the only point is, where will the dog be and will you be able to walk it or have it walked while traveling.

  6. Not really...But if I were u  I would get on a plane is a lot faster

  7. That dog will be pissing and crapping all of the case.

How do you think that 36 hours in a case is better than just few hours?

When your friend said to never put a dog on a plane, I don't think she meant that a train would be better.

    Good Luck...

  8. your question depends on what railroad company you are using.  you should ask your particular carrier for their pet/animal rules.

amtrak doesnt allow any pets to travel on trains, not in coach, not in sleeper, not in baggage.  exception is service animals, which are primarily dogs, but can also be mini-ponies.

via rail canada does allow some pet travel, there are restrictions.  and many more trains in europe allow pets to travel.

as far as dog and train in general, dogs can travel pretty well on trains, i agree that they dont get carsick on trains, and there is more space and no air pressure problems like cramped planes.

so if you have a service dog, here are tips.

but dogs do need to go to the bathroom every so often, and you can only get the dog off a train at a station.  most stations have concrete/brick platforms, parking lots, etc, so there is very little grass to take them out on, and if there is it is not generally by the train door.

many train stops are only 2-3 mins long, so conductors wont want you to go wandering off to the weeds with your dog, you'll end up holding up the train, or even be left behind if you slip off without tellling the conductor.

but some station stops take 5, 10, or even 20 minutes, and these longer stops are ideal for taking doggie to the grass for bathroom.  make sure you check with conductor first.

if your dog poops, clean up after it.  other passengers and the ticket clerks do not want to step in dog poo later, and if you can travel with your service dog, then you can clean after it and not expect me to do it.

i travel with my service dog all the time on amtrak, it works out great.
