Has anyone ever tried an IUD?

Question

I am considering Mirena or Paragard and I'm trying to hear from as many people as possible before I get one.

Any experiences with an IUD?

I am 21 have no kids but in a serious steady relationship for 5 years. I had my IUD (5 yr Mirena) inserted in September of 2007. It was really painful no lie. BUT it was totally worth it! I had cramps right after the insertion for about 2 days and then they went away. I had a regular period October and November and I haven't had a period since. In the beginning my boyfriend said he could feel something poking him but the strings softened and he can no longer feel them. I really love it. I would do it agin any day.

My sister-in-law took it. She says it works but then she gained A WHOLE bunch of weight on her. :P

I have been using the Mirena for the last 5 years to treat endometriosis and PCOS.  Since they are only good for 5 years I had my first one replaced this past May.  My first one was an absolute miracle, but this 2nd one has been an complete nightmare.  I would highly suggest doing a lot of research and talk to your doctor before making your decision.  

From personal experience the insertion process is extremely painful.  This 2nd time in May it was the absolute worst pain I have ever experienced.  I have experienced several complications from the 2nd Mirena including cramping so severe it sent me to the emergency room three days after the insertion process.  The cramping has continued off and on (more on than off) ever since.  I saw my doctor yesterday and will be having the Mirena removed.
