Question:

Has anyone ever worked as a tutor before?

I've graduated from college with a bachelor of science in Electrical Engineering...but I'm going to grad school in the fall for my MBA. Soo...I want to get a summer job other than my stupid, low paying job in retail...and one of my ideas was to become a tutor! Not for my college (no students will want to pay), but for local high school students (some parents would pay big bucks). I am an expert in math, and could tutor in that subject. It would also be rewarding, helping high school students excel in math, a very important and troubling subject.

So I was wondering...how would I advertise? What is a good rate ($ per hour)? The only way I could think of advertising is to take out an ad in the paper (expensive), or to somehow go to the high schools and talk to someone there, but I'm not sure if they would accept that.

I would appreciate any info you could give me...thanks.

  1. Well .. I say.. If you think your an expert in maths, GO HARD ! Kids these days are struggling a lot in their Maths, and parents will be looking forward to tutors in maths.

I have a little experience in being a Maths tutor. It was a lovely time teaching a bunch of willing kids ! They aren't so tough once you take control.

Aim high .. and I guarantee you'll get there !

    good luck !

  2. I'm in high school and have tutored, usually charging $10 an hour. With your degree and experience you should be able to charge $20-$30 an hour or every 45 mins. I know people who pay that much for tutoring in math and science(chem and physics). The best way to advertise is to put up flyers in the career center at the school or on websites such as craigslist. I don't know if many students will be looking for tutoring during the summer, though. However, alll the kids that failed their math classes might be looking for someone.

  3. I've been a tutor for years and I am currently a substitute high school teacher.  The best way is word-of-mouth or to take out an ad in the paper.  Though expensive at first, the returns are worth it.  Also post fliers on community bulletins and advertise on craigslist if you live near/in a major city.

Go ahead and go to the school and ask if you can place an ad in their school's newspaper, or place a flier in the library.  Also, introduce yourself to teachers who teach the subjects you want to tutor.

If you are spending the summer near where you went to high school, go back to your old teachers and let them know.  You will almost GUARANTEE to get a job that way.

    Good luck!
