It's been a while, but it used to happen a lot.  Darrel Waltrip once won at Bristol 12 laps head of 2nd place.

In the old days guys would win races by 8 laps or so. In 65 Ned Jarrett win by 22 laps at Spartanburg.

There was a time in the Daytona 500 when Richard Petty one and had lapped everyone in the field. How ridiculous is it that today the Top 6 were all that were left on the lead lap?

Bill Elliott lapped the field once at ... Atlanta one year? That was back in the mid-80's !!

Yes, it happened a lot in the 70s and 80s. In the modern era I am not so sure.

I remember DW doing that in the 80s, Junior Johnson cars were class of the field at the short tracks.
