  1. Getting in is easy.  It is the getting out that counts.  Traveling in and out by bus or car with a driver's license or birth certificate can work.  US airports and airport customs will want a passport.

  2. I think you are in luck.  In June 2007 the US State department issued a "travel accomodation" valid through the end of September that says as long as you have applied for your passport (and have proof of your application) you can re-enter the US by air with other forms of ID like your Driver's License and certified birth certificate.  I would also bring a copy of your expired passport (since you will have to re-submit the original to the US Passport office when you turn in your application).

The main thing is to check with the Mexican consulate to make sure that they don't require you to have a passport to enter Mexico by air.  You are still responsible to meet Mexican regulations.  But as far as getting back into the US is concerned, you will be fine.  Read the article posted below in my sources - it's the official word from Uncle Sam.

You should be fine.  Go ahead and apply to renew your passport, and then have a great time in Cabo!

  3. If you are flying , you must have a current passport.  You will not be allowed on an international flight without a valid passport.  If you apply tomorrow and pay the $60.00 extra for expedited service, you would probably have your passport in 3 weeks.
