Not much help but I saw a commercial for this discovery channel special where they attached cameras to whales that are known to go in deep waters, so i suppose thats how it would be done.

In the 1960's, Jaques Piccard and a companion went to the deepest part of the ocealn; Challenger deep in the Marianas Trench near the Phillipines.37,000 feet down in the bathyscape Trieste.

An astonishing achievement, which has never been repeated.
