I am not sure if it is our phone or our service. We have ATT CallVantage and while we are talking on the phone it cuts off both parties from hearing each other. It doesn't disconnect the call it only interrupts the conversation. I have cable internet with 4mb service if that matters.

  1. It could just be a slight flucuation in the signal coming in the cable line, or it could be a telephone provisioning problem.

Most likely just a flutter in the line.

If this is a continuous problem, call the phone company, they will troubleshoot the issue for you,

  2. Most VoIP problems are due to (in listed order) :

    - Router Configuration issues (or mis-configuration)

    - Internet connection issues

    - VoIP adapter configuration

    - Using Wireless-G Routers with 2.4 GHz cordless phones (RFI interference issues)

Monitor Modem/Router/VoIP ATA hardware status lights.

Know when all lights are illuminated "Normal" vs. flashing a problem.  When you have connection or voice issues, observe if hardware status lights are still normal or showing possible loss of signal or "registration" with VoIP service.  These indicators will facilitate in correlating if problems exist in equipment.

For wireless RFI issues, test with a "corded" telephone to eliminate any cordless RFI conflicts.

When it come to using VoIP, very few problems are actually due to the quality of VoIP service provider....

As much as some people like to rave about who is the Best VoIP service provider,  fact is, most service issues are equipment hardware and software configuration problems... not service provider. Where "most" service providers fail, is in providing good Customer Service Support and helping you solve your HW problems.
