Has anyone had a car crash with an Overhead shield car seat ? How bad was the crash? Were there any injuries to the child? Did the child cry ?

  1. I haven't had one, and wouldn't buy one. They are not as safe as a 5 point harness car seat, and at this point, almost all of them are expired. Only one brand still makes them: Dorel, which also owns Cosco, Safety1st, and Eddie Bauer labels. All the same seat, just different covers and padding.  An overhead shield seat is just a 3 point seat with a bar that goes over the child's head. They are much more protected with a 5 point harness, especially younger children. So...I haven't had one and haven't been in a wreck with one, but we have learned from other people who have, here's some info:

    Safety experts have concerns about CRs with shields. Tray shields are not usually covered with energy-absorbing padding to protect the head if it hits the shield. This contact is more likely with a shorter child and a loose harness. In a test series with a 12-month-size dummy, peak head acceleration was 35% higher for tray shield restraints than for 5-point harnesses. At least one child (19 lb) is known to have received a fatal head injury from contact with a tray shield.
