What pitfalls should I look out for? At present, it would be for family use but I may want to let it out in the future.

I'd be grateful for your advice and any recommendations (I am in London).

  1. You don't necessarily need planning permission if it's just a temporary wooden structure such as log cabin, unless it's above a certain height and floor space, or you're going to make it habitable overnight. Obviously, if it's a permanent structure, that's different and your local council may have additional restrictions, so it's wise to talk to your planning officer.

  2. You will need planning permission of course. I am considering doing this too but using a summer house built of wood.

Think about the electrics, phone lines, suitable roofing to protect from rain and security.

First speak to the council to see if you can build

  3. Well ~get~ a friendly builder to help you  with size / dimensions /etc etc/insulation. etc

Why not add a few items to it in case you want to rent it out as a mini -flat in future? )

    cheers.

(first get building & planning permission from your city council)

  4. You will almost certainly need planning permission (and building regulations) Biggest problems are drainage, and access to the site - if you can't organise independent access - you have schelp it though your house (in pieces of course). Talk to the council, you can usually pop along to the town hall and see a duty planning officer who will give you a better idea. If you are in a conservation area (like about half of London is) special rules apply.
