  2. I dont think so. I never heard that. But pregancy does change your hair it makes it either oily, dry, longer etc. So I would take a test and see. Good luck. Baby dust to you and everyone else. =]

  3. First, severe dandruff can be a sign of an allergic reaction to hair products such as hairspray or gels.  If you have begun using any new hair products that may be worth checking.  Yet, this is rarely the cause.

Dandruff is, of course, dead skin that flakes up.  However, the cause of severe dandruff, meaning more than just a few flakes every now and then, is usually a fungus that grows on the scalp.  The fungus eats the oils on your scalp and accelerates the skin drying out and flaking up. Dandruff shampoos have anti-fungal chemicals that attempt to eliminate the fungus in order to prevent severe dandruff from returning.  There are a variety of shampoos out there that have different chemicals and part of the reason is that there can be different strains of the fungus.  What that means is that you should look at the shampoos and find the active ingredient.  If the first shampoo doesn't work very well then get a new type with a different active ingredient.

However, even if you kill the fungus the fungus itself may (quite likely) return.  Some people will use the dandruff shampoo one or more times a week so that if this happens the fungus will be killed again.

There is some speculation that the cause of the fungus returning is directly related to diet.  Most people agree that the severe dandruff causing fungus requires your scalp to be oily.  Some people believe that the composition of that scalp oil also plays a major role.

What that means is that if you eat a lot of fatty fried foods it may make your scalp more oily and attract the fungus that causes severe dandruff.  Also, according to some people, more important than the amount of fats is the balance of fatty acids that attract or prevent the fungus.  If that is true, depending on your diet you would most likely want to increase in-take of Omega-3, which is what is usually lacking in an American diet.

OK, now that there is a bit of background on dandruff here, I'd also like to point out that while pregnant I personally would not recommend using dandruff shampoos without first confirming that they are not going to affect your pregnancy.

My wife is currently pregnant with our second child and has a skin fungus that has appeared on her leg.  We consulted a dermatologist that we know about this and he recommended that we just wait until she has the baby and then use Selsun Blue (the dandruff shampoo) to kill the fungus.  In other words, if you can wait until after the pregnancy than do so but if it is a big problem for you then make sure it is OK with your doctor or midwife first and they will probably okay it.

Also, in relation to pregnancy and oil imbalance.  My wife was taking an Omega Women oil supplement from the health food store with our first baby but has not been (until just a few days ago) for our second baby.

I also used to have dandruff very severely and used shampoos for years.  If I stopped using the shampoo I would get severe dandruff within a week.  However, I totally redid my diet to include more fish and no fast foods and I don't use the shampoos anymore and the dandruff hasn't come back for months.

  4. I am not sure if dandruff is an early sign of pregnancy or not; however, I do know that it is a result of dry scalp. Maybe you are washing your hair too much (more than 3 times in a single shower), and maybe your scalp isn't getting the moisture it needs. it might just be the hair products your using. It can be your shampoo, hair gel, hair grease,or anything like that.

  5. Use Neutogena T Gel shampoo.
