Question:

Has anyone had a toddler with a consistent low grade fever?

I asked about this before but only one person responded with no experience. My 2 1/2 year old son's temperature is around 100 degrees every night. The range is between 99.5 and 100.8, but it only rarely dips below 100.1. In the morning his temp is generally normal, but it just goes up throughout the day. We have been to the doctor for many, many tests, but everything turns out normal. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, what turned out to be the cause?

  1. A pediatrician I know, cousin actually, says it is normal for the temperature to be higher in the evening time.  Even when my son was sick, he said it is normal for the fever to spike in the evening time.  Unless she is acting sick, not eating, or not drinking, I am sure she is fine.

In the evening, they have been playing all day and most probably digesting their dinner.

  2. Keep talking with your doctor. I know our doctor alwasy tells us not to worry about fevers or high temps unless they get over 103 and i have had friends children 103-105 and just be sent home. Children's temp goes up and down and stays within range. they dont even consider it a "fever" til its over 103...

I would always goolge things. my daughter had an injury for months and I ran every test we could think of along with x-rays and she is only 6...this lady told me to check for juvenile rhumitoid arthrits and sure enough that is what she had. Doctors wont test for EVERYTHING so talk to more moms and also google alot for some more things that could cause temps in that range and for the period of time it could be.

My husbands friend at work. Everytime I turn around they are taking that baby to the hospital all the time with a temp of 105 and this has been going on for months and the docs tell them nothing wrong...

  3. i havent experienced this myself ...i do have a toddler at home but i did learn in a biology class (university, our professor was a retired physician) that it is normal for some ppl to have an elevated temp being normal for their bodies and that especially young children should have their temps checked often so mothers know what is normal for them....i would also like to ask if you are using an ear thermometer...i used to have one and it always read my sons temp was higher then it actually was..and i would always be worried.....i know its hard for younger children but your best bet is to get the older kind (digital, under the tongue) you might notice it reads normally for him

  4. As other posters have said, it could just be that your child runs a higher temperature that spikes a little at night. However, if I were you, I'd keep talking to the doctor about it. A fever of unknown origin can be indicative of a problem, although typically the temperature has to be 101 degrees or higher for it to be classified as a fever.

  5. My normal body temp is 99.  Maybe he just runs a little warmer.

  6. The odds are very good that your son is perfectly normal. 98.6 is not actually a "normal" temperature, it is the average temperature of humans, so some people's are higher and some are lower. Mine runs from 96.4 to 97.2 - in me, 99.0 is a fever. My wife's runs from 98.4 to 99.5. My daughters both have "subnormal" temps like me.

If the doctors say his blood is fine (especially his white count, meaning no infection) then his temp will probably always be higher than average.
