has anyone had a tongue tied baby if so when did they get the surgery and did it effect your child's speech? my dr said we needed to wait till he started talking before cutting it. i feel that it'd be easier when he's a baby to do it. what do you think?

  1. get a  second opinion. Maybe theres a reason. They wont do my daughters hernia until she's 4-5

  2. My youngest brother was tongue-tied.  All the doctor did was snip that little piece of tissue that holds your tongue to the bottom of your mouth.  They did that the day my brother was born, in fact.  We tease him now and tell him that "they snipped your tongue and you haven't shut up since!"  Fortunately, he's a real good sport about it.

One of our cousins was born tongue-tied but it must not have been as straight-forward as my brother's, because nothing was done for him until he was 4.  But both my brother and my cousin were born far enough back that things have probably changed.

If it were my baby, I would ask the doctor if there is a reason to wait, or if it is simply his preference to wait.  It seems logical to me that doing it earlier is better than waiting until your baby tries to talk and can't make the sounds properly, but there may be other considerations.  So ask, and remember you can always get a second opinion.

  3. My 3 year old is tongue tied but we waited and he now doesn't need to be clipped. I was so freaked out about having to but him under for some thing so simple to be done. He is a little hard to understand but is getting better and will we going to preschool to help with his speech and the best part is preschool will be free for him. He has come really far in the last year and now almost every one can understand him. Good luck.

  4. Tongue tie is usually snipped in early infancy. (Since it can make breastfeeding difficult it needs to be done early.)  It's a VERY simple procedure, done in the doctor's office. If your doctor won't do it, get a second opinion.

  5. My son had his tongue tie clipped at 6 days old because he was not able to suckle.  My only regret - and it is a big one - is that it was done under general anesthesia.

I was very stressed then and didn't do any research before consenting to the surgery in a hospital.  In retrospect, I wish I hadn't allowed myself to be talked into the anesthesia.  It depends on the type of tongue-tie, but clipping is often an office procedure done with a local anesthetic or none at all since the frenulum actually has no nerve endings.  Since your baby will be older when the procedure is done, risks of anesthesia may be more negligible anyway.

  6. We found out my son was tounge tied when he was in the hospital, a few days after he was born. The nurse practictioner suggested waiting until he was a little older becasue it might or might not effect his speach, and becasue it was a mild case of tongue tied. But they also told me it might effect how he eats and other things too. I decided to get the procedure done before we left the hospital. I was given the option to do the procedure  then instead of waiting if that is what I choose. It's very simple, they just cut the skin underneath the tongue. I felt it would be easier for him being so young rather than waiting until he was older. I also didn't want him to have to deal with speach problems if he didn't have to.
