  1. Hey there,

First, you have to understand every company will have dissatisfied customers. Meaning, VoIP.com, Vonage, Lingo, Phone Power, ViaTalk, all of them have unhappy customers. So the point being, asking here shouldn't be how you make your decision.

You'll need to get corporate reviews done by companies. I use http://voip-reviewer.com

A quick look says Vonage is like #4 on their list I think, and VoIP.com is more down there. I am using their Top voip provider and have been extremely satisfied with their service. And, it's a heck of a lot cheaper than Vonage (Vonage is overpriced because they're so popular).

Hope that helps and good luck!

  2. I had Vonage for about a year.  Overall I liked it.  The only reason I cancelled it is because my cell phone has unlimited minutes, so there really wasn't a need to have the house phone also after my stepdaughter started college.

There was one noticeable difference between Vonage and regular phone service.  After I subscribed to Vonage I noticed there is a 3 second delay from the time I pick up the phone until the time I can place a call.  It takes about 3 seconds for the dial tone to come through.  Vonage says this is normal with their customers.  I got used to it.

I never had any issues with Vonage at all and the rates are much better than the phone company.  I don't see any major drawback to using them.  If I get a house phone again I will call Vonage.

  3. I ordered Vonage.  I called AT&T to discontinue their service.  Upon telling them why I wanted to discontinue, I was informed that if I discontinued the phone service, I could not have internet service with them.  Now, the interesting part!!  Even with another internet provider, you have to have a separate line for your phone and your internet.  Then you have to get someone to come in and rewire your jacks if you have more than one, because your other phones will not work unless they are connected to your computer.  I called, got a return # and sent their equipment back to them immediately.

In the meantime, my sister, also, tried Vonage, unknown to me.  I would have warned her if I had known.  She had two lines and was told that she would have no problem once she connected her Vonage equipment to her computer with either line working.  She questioned them, extensively because one of the lines is to her business.  She was assured she would have no problem.  After recieving the equipment, following instructions to connect it, only one phone worked.  When she called back to Vonage, she was informed that she would need to have the jacks connected.  She had someone come in to do that and paid $80.00.  Her business phone did not work for a month.  They charged her over $300.00 the first month, after telling her the first month would be free and it took over 3 months to get her money back and continued charging her for every month, thereafter, even though her phones were not working.  Then, it was only with her writing to the Attorney Generals Office of NC, reporting their deceptive practices and the office contacting Vonage before she got her money back.  They, at first sent her a partial payment stating that they had not recieved her equipment.  She returned the equipment after the first month.  It took over 3 months before they returned all of her money minus shipping charges.

I have a friend who has had the MagicJack for 5 months, which her brother gave to her.  Her brother has had his for over a year and they have had no problems and love it.  You, also, have to rewire for the MagicJack if you have more than one phone for your other phones to work.  The difference is MagicJack tells you that up front and gives  you instructions oh how to do it.  There are no surprises.  I have not recieved my order, as of yet but when I do, I will report on the service.
