  1. Every gastric bypass recovery will be unique.  Id suggest talking to a local surgeon and finding out what you personally can expect to go through while recovering.  Some general recovery scenarios are outlined here:

  2. I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery 4 months ago.

6 months prior, I took classes on nutrition and the importance of what to eat and what supplements to take.

I was in the hospital 2 days. I took oral pain medication until 6 days post-op (days 5 and 6 was only at bedtime to sleep). I was able to drive day 7 or 8. I work on my feet, so I needed more time to get back to work. I could have gone back in 4-5 weeks, but I took another week off and took a full 6 weeks off.

Diet is followed per the individual recommendation of the surgeon and the nutritionist. In other words, my diet may not be anyone else's diet.

The most important thing in the post op diet (after maybe week 4) is protein first, then vegetables, then fruit. Anything else should be avoided, like pasta or potato or bread or rice or sweets or fatty foods. In other words, my diet now is a standard weight loss diet. The beauty is I am not hungry like I was before.

The first 2 weeks were liquids (broth, clear protein supplements, sugar free jello, sugar free Popsicles in week 1) and liquid/blended soups (cream soups, cottage cheese, yogurt, sugar free instant breakfast).

By week 3, I was able to eat soft foods and blended foods, like tuna/chicken salad, cooked vegetables. Well chewed string cheese.

I must take in a minimum of 70 grams of protein/day.

Everything must be chewed to mastication, or to mush. Anything not well chewed may get stuck (anything larger than an inch).

I now can eat about a cup to a cup and a half of food at a sitting. I cannot eat more than 9 grams of fat or 15 grams of carbohydrates at a sitting without feeling bad, so the surgery keeps me honest. I eat between 1000 and 1300 calories/day. MANY post-ops eat much less than I do.

I take calcium citrate, iron, and multivitamin supplements and a protein shake every day.

I have lost 60 lbs so far. I plan on losing another 70 in the next year and a half.

  3. I have Gastric Bypass surgery 10 months ago.  I've lost 120 pounds (40 more to go!!)

I was back to normal in 7 days.  I was in the hospital for 2 days.  I never took anything stronger than tylenol for my minimal pain.  You have to eat a liquid diet, then pureed foods, soft foods and then normal foods.  I was eating noraml foods within 3 weeks.  I did the liquids only for the days I was in the hospital (2 days).  I went home on pureeds (4 days) and then onto soft foods (2 weeks).  YOu go by what your body can tolerate.  Introduce new foods slowly and if your body can't handle it..stop and go back to what works for you.

The diet is pretty simple..no sugar, low carb, high protien.  I eat 80 grams of protien per day.  I eat 800 calories per day. 1/2 cup meals. I've gotten quite creative with my cooking and it keeps the diet fun.  I excerice at least one hour per day, when my son is at school it's closer to two hours.  You do have to chew your food well.  I don't chew until it's liquified but I do chew it well.  I've never had a problem with food sticking or with dumping.

Every surgeon is different and each one gives a different diet.  I've known epople who have had the surgery taht eat 1500 calories a day.  I could never eat that much.  I prefer the smaller meals and so does my "stomach".
