Question:

Has anyone had success with a natural way to eliminate migraines? Prescription meds are not working!?

My Mother is having cluster migraines, causing her to spend most of every week in bed, either surviving the migraines or recovering from the after effects. Zomeg and Imatrex caused her to have side effects, mostly of scary, out-of-control behavior, so she is just using Darvon and drinking coffee. This is no way to live! Has anyone used acupuncture, acupressure, a chiropractor, herbs, exercises...anything that works? I have been running her business with my husband in her absence and I am getting worried about her because she can barely work!

Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. Do this pranayam everyday and the migraine will start to ease off gradually.Allow upto 4 months for the migraine to disappear.Drink warm water. Both of you can do it, to compare notes.

Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after 1 minute.

Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for upto 15 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day) Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.

Anulom Vilom -  Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril

then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril

then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril

then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.

This is one cycle of anulom vilom.

Repeat this cycle for 20 to 30  minutes twice a day(maximum 60 minutes in one day).

You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep breaths into the lungs.

Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee.

    Duration : 5 to 15 times

After you are better, continue the breathing once a day to stay healthy forever.

  2. Believe it or not LSD, or magic mushrooms.

  3. If you truly are talking about cluster migraines, not cluster headaches, one thing that I learned several years ago was something very simple. Drink a big glass of water (16 oz), like in 10 minutes. More people than not have found success with this that I know. Best part is there's absolutely no risk and it's cheap!

  4. My mother and I both had terrible Migraines similar to the description of your mothers.  The first thing we did was elliminate dairy products.  Then we cut down on wheat products.  If you avoid things that people are commonly allergic to, migraines usually at least lessen in intensity, if not dissappear altogether.  I haven't had a migraine in months since I stopped eating so much processed food and milk and dairy.  also, constipation can trigger these migraines, so eating a lot of fiber (bran cereal, fruits and veg with fiber in them) really helps me too.  my mom still has to take imitrex from time to time, but i think it is because i caught my migraines earlier on in life than she did.

ask your mother to get allergy tests done, because sometimes these things can trigger or worsen migraines. also, my mother recently had a very very bad bout with a migraine. she lost some vision and decided to fly to the hospital out here immediately.  the opthamologist told her to watch out for these bouts, because it could be a sign of something worse, which might eventually lead to a brain problem.

    hope this info helps!

  5. I'm sorry to hear about your mother. My mother had the same exact thing and took Imatrex, (Zomeg was only taken once and never again) and there was another. The side effects were just as bad as the migraines themselves and longer lasting!

It could (as was the case with my mother) be that the migraines are a symptom of another underlying problem. For my mother, it was hormonal and food allergies that suddenly developed and the migraines turned out to be symptoms of these bigger problems. Most conventional doctors don't look for underlying problems beyond what is obvious and just write prescriptions to treat the symptoms.

There are plenty of natural remedies... some help, some don't. I would suggest trying to find a real naturopathic physician to diagnose her problem. It may be something you would have never imagined like acute allergies, hormones, deficiancies, etc. For something as strong as migraines, I would not suggest just trying herbal supplements willy-nilly as the stomach is very sensitive during migraine attacks and auras.

After acupuncture, herbal treatments (under the care of a herbal specialist) and message, my mother recovered comepletely and quickly and I'm sure yours will too.

Best of luck to you both.
