Question:

Has anyone had the goiter removed??

I am going to be visiting John Hopskins within the next two weeks to have an observation screen test done to my goiter (I was diagnosed with the hypothyroid condition years ago) and had stopped taking the medication which was prescribed to me due to continuing growth.

It has been under control but continues to be of noticable size... I feel as if it is time to have it removed but first wanted to ask those who have had their's removed. What exactly are the symptoms of this dangerous procedure afterwards?

I visited the website http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/548202 and this has me seeking more questions than answers.

Thank you all for your help.

  1. first off the surgery is not that dangerous so don't worry yourself sick. After I had mine out I had a mild sore throat for a few days and my voice was a bit hoarse for a month but it came back.  The "symptoms" you are asking about are that of hypothyrodism.  you'll need to start taking thyroid medication again because complete removal of the thyroid causes hypothyroidism. you have to have thyroid hormone to live. Skipping medication is not an option. Not everyone experiences hypo symptoms even if they have the condition. The thyroid regulates metabolism, a slow metabolism can cause weight gain. Hair loss is common with thyroid medication but I have not experienced this. Depression can occur from changing hormone levels but that can be helped too. don't worry so much
