race at the Belmont Stakes. Has he raced since and was the final findings of why he lost the Triple Crown ever made public. There seems to be no word on him what-so-ever. Was he sold, retired or still racing.

  1. After the Belmont, he spent a lot of training time just jogging around the track.  When they finally asked him for a timed workout (meaning they asked him to gallop pretty fast), a snail could have outworked his 5 furlongs in 1:06.73 (that's really slow).  A couple weeks later he went a little faster... 1:02.86.  Then finally yesterday he got it together and ran a respectable 1:01.20 on a pretty slow track.  Big Brown is scheduled to start in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Sunday August 3... that will be his first race since the Belmont.

As for the Belmont, it was discovered that Big Brown was running on a loose shoe.  When the horses broke out of the gate, Big Brown dove to his right, right in front of Guadalcanal who stepped on the back of Big Brown's hind foot... that pried the nails out of his hoof and the shoe banged around on his hoof the whole race.  No one is sure if that's the reason he lost or not... after all, his jockey insisted that Big Brown felt absolutely sound during the entire race... suggesting that the horse moved properly despite the shoe issue.

Of course there's still many other factors that could have caused his poor Belmont performance.  Personally, I don't think the horse was bred to go the 1 1/2 miles and once he ran 1 1/4 miles, he was just out of energy because he had reached his limit.  Also, the horse wasn't really ready for the Belmont... after the Preakness, Big Brown didn't really continue "training"... he jogged around the track a little bit, but there were no true workouts... and then he had the hoof crack problem which prevented him from training for a few days while it healed... but of course, Big Brown's trainer can't admit that perhaps he didn't have the horse ready for the race... he feels the need to pin the blame somewhere else.

So why the horse ran so poorly in the Belmont is still anyone's guess.  Maybe we'll get some more answers after he runs in the Haskell in a couple weeks.

  2. No, he has not raced since his 9th place finish in the Belmont Stakes. He is still in training for the Haskell Invitational on August 3, and then he will train for the Breeders Cup Classic. After the Breeders Cup Classic, he will be retired to Three Chimneys Farm.

  3. training great/ will race in august

  4. He's still racing. His next scheduled race is the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on August 3rd. He probably will then have a prep race or two for the Breeders Cup Classic at Santa Anita.
