Has anyone heard of American Family Insurance? Are they a good company?

Generally, American Family is a great company to have for your insurance. However, you will pay more for their coverage then you will pay for a policy from an internet company (Esurance etc).  What you need to do is decide if having a local agent to help you if you have questions or a claim is worth spending a few extra bucks.

The company is strong financially and it's a mutual company which means no stockholders to ruin the company. So they should remain strong for the long haul.

As a claim adjuster, I always advise people to get a policy through a local agent (like American Family)

American Family Insurance has been around for many years.  They offer a wide assortment of insurance products, from life to property to auto.   I don't exactly know how long they've been in service or where is their corporate headquarter but they are a solid company.  Whether they are good or bad, it depends on whether or not they have, in your estimation, reliable products, services and agents to suit your insurance needs.  At the end, when insurance shopping is concerned, you must go for quality over price because nothing is free and you will get what you paid for.  Two other highly rated company that also carry auto, life and property insurances are State Farm (#1 in the industry) and All State (a close 2nd).  Two companies to avoid for the simple fact that they primarily do their business over phone or internet (meaning no fixed agent to call when you need help, relationship is key factor behind the insurance business) are GEICO and Progressive.

American Family Insurance has been in business for over 80 years.  We are a Fortune 300 company.  Our home office is in Madison, WI.  My wife and I were actually customers of American Family and I liked them so much I decided to work for them.  I have been so happy with American Family Insurance and the more personal nature through which the company deals with it's clients that I coulndn't imagine going with another company.
