Has anyone heard of Irena Sendler?

Irena was a Polish Catholic Social Worker who in the 1930's used her position to get into Jewish ghettos and rescue children. She was able to smuggle over 2500 children in toolboxes, suitcases, trunks, through sewers, etc. She placed these children in Christian homes and recorded their information on pieces of tissue paper and buried them in jars outside her home with hopes of one day finding them and returning them to their families. Unfortunately, nearly all of the parents had been killed and the children remained either in foster care or were placed with distant relatives. Irene was caught, questioned, tortured, had her feet and legs broken by German soldiers, but never gave up the location of the children or the bottled tissues.

In 2007, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her compassion and sacrifice only to be beaten by Al Gore, who produced an opinion piece to capitalize on the gullibility of others.

She died Monday, may 12th 2008.

  1. I don't know how the Nobel Foundation gets their funds, but I think their willing to accepting donations.

I think only someone as rich as Al Gore can stand in front of a copy of Micheal Mann's hockey stick, call it science and win a Nobel Peace Prize.

  2. Nope. Never heard of her until a second ago.

  3. I know her, she was bad :)

  4. Irena sounds like she lived a good long life.  It is important to remember that there were a lot of Irenas back then.

Why you uglied the question by bringing the Nobel Peace Prize business into it, and putting it in this category, I don't know.

Many worthy individuals and groups are nominated for awards they never win.  That's life. In this case, those on the Nobel Prize committee chose to recognize Gore and the UN for their efforts. The Irena Sendler website doesn't seem to hold a grudge.  Neither should you.

  5. I've never heard of her. Thanks for sharing. It's important that we learn more about women like this who make a significant, important impact in the lives of others, in their community, and to the world. Too many women these days live their lives making money by abusing their souls and selling their bodies...whether it be in strip clubs, p**n magazines, or at Hooters...

Women need to learn more about women like this, Irena Sendler, who use their brains and intelligence to help others and make positive changes in society. Thank you so, so much for sharing this. It's great to know that there are women out there who will NOT play into the stereotype that men want us to fall into. There are women out there who care and will use their brain cells to accomplish tasks and make changes.

Rest in peace, Irena Sendler. Thank you for all you have done.

  6. Just an after thought...I don't think a true Humanitarian, would have much trouble giving up a token, for a place in the heart.

  7. never heard lol

how would the best answer be chosen ? LOL

  8. I would be ashamed to accept a prize from that ridiculous organization after the c**p they've pulled, giving an award to a joker like Al Gorbal warming. The woman you mention was deserving of far more than that smutt loving, insignificant, far left liberal loon organization could possibly give her. Nobel is base. A true humanitarian has no business being associated with such a wretched pile of ooze. Noble my a**.

  9. Irena Sendler's actions 75 years ago are directly responsible for tens of thousands of additional people living on the planet today.  Such actions do not represent the values of the Nobel selection committee.  Winning their approval speaks volumes about the recipient.  Just ask this guy:

  10. Her actions proved her nobility, prizes do not make  one noble only the ability to sacrifice yourself for others do.  Those whom she helped recognized her, and that is worth so much more then any token.

  11. Nope, never heard of her.  I'm sure glad Al Gore got the Nobel Prize for his brave attempt to educate the ignorant!

  12. I have heard of her she was a great human being. But what do you expect from a commitee that gave the the peace prize to Yassir Arafat? I then lost all of my respect for them when they did that for a terrorist.

  13. I have heard of her many times. She was a great, brave woman who rescued so many children. She was a person who truly deserves to be remembered and respected for what she has done to help all those people. Rest In Peace Irena Sendler, you will be remembered for always
