My cat just died. I am still crying but wanted to know so I can tell my neighbor who gave it to me. She hadn't used it on her cats yet. He was sick within 10-12 hours and then acting quiet and would not eat much for a couple days. Yesterday she got up and went to her food and was acting better...but when I woke up today she was dying, having spasms and shaking...I am afraid it is my fault for being so broke I couldn't take her to the vet. It wasn't an overdose I don't think because my cat was close to 15 pounds.

Poor Smoky...8 years of friendship.

  1. I am so sorry this happened to you and your cat Smoky. I had something similar happen to my cat Wally a few years ago. I found him dead hours after I used Frontline Flea product on him.

Here is site that contains info on all of these types of flea killer ( pet killers too in my opinion) ----> http://www.thensome.com/fleakiller.htm

I off my condolences   ... All you can do now is remember you were only trying to help Smoky and he knew that you loved him. I felt very guilty after this happened to my cat... I have other cats and I am now very fearful of using these types of products on them.

  2. Yes- what people don't know is those spot-on treatments are VERY dangerous!

Read/print that and show your neighbor- it's not your fault, we've been lulled into false security about those products, and the reality is pets die every day from normal, approved use of those products.

I'm sorry for your loss.  :-(

  3. So sorry for your loss. It is possible that the flea control was toxic to your cat. Cats are more sensitive than dogs to chemicals and different cats  have different reactions. Even vet approved products are not always safe for some cats, but they are safer than an OTC product.

I'm sure your heart is broke and it will take time to heal, but I wish you the best.

  4. if you had used any other flea treatment even a flea soap during a bath within the past 30 days and then put the spot on flea treatment then this is considered an overdose and my cat almost died of this and the spasms and shaking is almost a sure sign it was an overdose because this is what happened to my cat and I took her to a vet emergency clinic where she was immediately bathed and put on IV for 8hours before I was able to take her home...I preach this all the time on here I only wish you had seen some of my answers because alot of people arent aware that you cant use more than one flea treatment within 30 days...sorry for your loss

  5. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your cat. Unfortunately, these over the counter flea meds can have these reactions on cats. It may not even affect the cat one time but will cause seizures and or death the next time. Don't feel guilty. This was an unfortunate occurrence that you  were not aware of.

This can also occur with vet medication but only rarely. Best wishes.

  6. The flea and tick control that can be bought over the counter in your local stores are not as safe for your cat as the vet approved brands.  I am sorry for your loss and do agree that you should let your neighbor know.  It could be that your cat was allergic but it could also be that the medication is a bad batch and could harm your neighbors pet also.
