  1. The Bergen Steamship Company (Det Bergenske Dampskibsselskab) was founded in 1851 to run a service between Bergen, Stavanger, Kristiansand and Hamburg or Altona. Services later expanded and eventually became world wide. In 1907 the Dutch owned Norwegian Steamship Company was taken over with their three ships and a Bergen - Rotterdam service commenced. The same year Vestlandske Lloyd, Bergen was purchased jointly with Nordenfjeldske and the fleet of four ships divided between the two companies. This acquisition enabled Bergen Line to operate a service to Iceland. The Norwegian South American Line was set up in 1913 as a joint operation between Bergen Line, Otto Thoresen Line and Nordenfjeldske to sail between Norway, Rio de Janeiro, Santos and Buenos Aires. This service ceased in 1980. Between 1921 and 1961 Canada Steamship Lines operated a Canada - Europe service with ships on long term charter from Norwegian companies, one of which was Bergen Line. The tanker trade was entered in 1951 and lasted until 1979. The company also operated cruise ships from 1921 until 1971. They then set up the Royal Viking Line in partnership with Nordenfjeldske to operate cruise liners. In 1984 Bergen Line was taken over by the Anders Jahre controlled Kosmos Line, but continued to operate as a company to manage the Norway - Newcastle route ferries.

  4. Go to your public library and check for books on ships and lines. I have never heard of Bergen Lines, but the librarian may be able to assist you by getting a book from another library.
